Oil and gas

The oil and gas industry faces a range of challenges including environmental concerns, regulatory pressures and evolving technology. Environmental concerns, such as carbon emissions and the impact of fossil fuels on climate change, are putting pressure on the industry to transition to cleaner forms of energy and to use more sustainable ingredients. Cellulose nanocrystals have been studied as a potential additive in the oil and gas industry to help meet these challenges. Here are some examples:

1. Drilling fluids: NanoCellX® can be used as an additive in drilling fluids to improve their rheological properties. They can increase the viscosity and yield point of the drilling fluid, reducing the risk of wellbore instability and improving drilling efficiency.

2. Fracturing fluids: NanoCellX® can be used to enhance proppant performance in fracturing fluids by improving their conductivity and reduce the risk of proppant flowback. They can form a strong, stable network in the fractures, increasing the conductivity of the fracture and improving the efficiency of the hydraulic fracturing process.

3. Completion fluids: NanoCellX® can be used as rheological agent in fracturing fluids to improve sand and water management. They can suspend proppants and reduce porosity when needed to improve the efficiency of completion fluids.

4. Enhanced oil recovery: NanoCellX® can be used as an additive in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to improve the efficiency of oil recovery. They can be used as a mobility control agent, reducing the permeability of high-permeability zones and forcing the injected fluids to flow through low-permeability zones, improving the efficiency of the EOR process.

5. Corrosion inhibitors: NanoCellX® can be used as a natural corrosion inhibitor in oil and gas pipelines and equipment. They can form a dense, uniform coating on the metal surface, reducing the risk of corrosion and extending the lifespan of the equipment.

Overall, cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to improve the performance and footprint of the oil and gas industry, and research is ongoing to explore their full potential.

Case Study

Nanoverse collaborated with one of its customers to expand the temperature range of its completion fluid while minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The customer was seeking a sustainable solution to reduce its carbon footprint and become more competitive in the market. Nanoverse’s R&D team worked closely with the customer to develop two new products that offer superior thermal stability and lower GHG emissions. The joint development effort allowed the most efficient use of each partner’s knowledge and resources and resulted in products that are now used in oil wells around the world. By working with Nanoverse, the customer was able to get closer to its net-zero objective and become more competitive in the marketplace. This case study demonstrates Nanoverse’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions and working closely with its customers to meet their evolving needs.
