Paints and Coatings

Paints and Coatings

The paints, inks, and coatings industry is under pressure to reduce its environmental impact, with a focus on reducing emissions and transitioning to more sustainable and non-toxic materials. Cellulose nanocrystals have been studied as a potential additive for improving various aspects of paints, inks, and coatings and make them 100% biobased. Here are some examples:

1. Rheology control: NanoCellX® can be used to control the rheology of paints, inks, and coatings, improving their flow properties and stability. They can enhance the viscosity and thixotropy of the product, resulting in improved application properties.

2. Emulsification: NanoCellX® can be used as a stabilizer and emulsifiers in paints, inks, and coatings. They can form stable suspensions due to their small size and high surface area, resulting in improved performance and reduced settling.

3. Mechanical properties: NanoCellX® can be used to improve the mechanical properties of paints, inks, and coatings, such as hardness, flexibility, and adhesion. They can enhance the strength and durability of the product, resulting in improved performance and longevity.

4. Barrier properties: NanoCellX® can be used to improve the barrier properties of paints, inks, and coatings, such as their resistance to water and gas permeation. They can help to form a more stable and uniform film.

5. Antimicrobial properties: NanoCellX® can be used as a natural antimicrobial agent in paints, inks, and coatings, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause degradation and discoloration.

6. Corrosion inhibitors: NanoCellX® can be used as a natural corrosion inhibitor in paints. They can form a dense, uniform coating on the metal surface, reducing the risk of corrosion and extending the lifespan of the equipment.

7. Optical: NanoCellX® can be used as an optical component in paints, inks and coatings. They can form liquid crystal structure which can dried to form structural colors used in glitter and anti-counterfeiting components. They can also be used to enhance colours in formulations.

Overall, cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to improve paints, inks, and coatings, performance and make them more sustainable. Research is ongoing to explore their full potential.

Case Study

Nanoverse collaborated with one of its customers to develop innovative biobased paint binders. The customer was looking to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly and high-performance paint binders. As part of its initiative, the customer aimed to develop a 100% biobased binder that would meet the demanding formulation stability requirements of the paint industry. Nanoverse’s R&D team worked closely with the customer to test several approaches using NanoCellX®. After a successful period of research and development, the customer launched a new 100% biobased paint binder, which is now sold as part of its product family. This collaboration exemplifies Nanoverse’s commitment to delivering sustainable and innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of its customers.
